More and more, I am asked how people can build brand awareness, get speaking engagements, create a higher profile for the work they do. And my standard answer is, “The more you’re out there, the more you’re out there.”
It’s true. A friend in California just asked me how she can help people to get speaking engagements. My response is, you simply start by attending events where you’d like to get more involved, and then when the time is right, offer yourself as a speaker. And when you do a great job at speaking, people in the audience will ask you to speak in other places.
It has to be strategic, of course. You can’t expect to sit at home and watch reruns of a favorite TV show and think the invitations to speak will come pouring in. And you can’t expect that your speaking opportunities will start off with big price tags. It just doesn’t work that way.
You have to put in the time to reap the rewards. Speak for free and speak a lot and you will eventually be paid for it. Or you’ll make money on the back-end by signing up new clients so impressed with what you have to offer.
You have to do the work if you want to get ahead.
Too many people believe that if they sit back and believe they are talented, others will too. Sorry. Doesn’t work that way.
There is a book on whether God truly provides or what our part is in the outcome of our lives. It states very clearly that while God does have a path for each of us, we have to do what is expected of us – no more, no less. So if your profession demands 60 hours a week, don’t think 40 hours and a lot of fervent prayer will result in millions.
Likewise, don’t put in an extra 20 hours and think you’ll be the supreme revenue generator. Do what is appropriate for your profession and your role, don’t slack off and don’t whine – the results will be exactly as they should be.
The other day an entrepreneur complained about less trained competitors stealing business away with lower prices. I shook my head. It’s not about them. Your situation is all your creation. It’s tempting to blame others for whatever happens to us, but it’s really kind of wimpy. We’re in the driver’s seat.
So the more you put yourself out there – in coffee meetings to truly get to know someone else and what they do, in speaking engagements where you offer information and tips that help others (rather than a hard sale just about you), in any situation where you are of service, from the heart – the more you will be out there, succeeding and satisfied.
